DTE formally prompted the Parliament & the Supreme Court against the newly developed regulation on Court Fees

Defend the Environment dispatched its formal letter written to the Parliament and the Federal Supreme Court on the date 29 November 2023 concerning the negative implications of Court Fees on Environmental Public Interest Litigants like Defend the Environment.

Our company – Defend the Environment – has submitted a letter requesting that provisions be included in the new draft regulation that Determine the Judicial Fees of the Federal Courts in recognition of Environmental Public Interest Litigation.

We demanded that Environmental Public Interest Litigations need to be exempted from the judicial fees due to their special characteristics. We provided the legal and practical challenges of judicial fees as a justification for the exemption of public interest litigation from fees. For the Standing Committee for Law and Justice issues and has approached the Federal Supreme Court and informed the Federal Human Rights Commission in carbon copy.

Following the submission of the letter, Mr. Melkamu Ogo, the founder and board chairman of our Organization gave a briefing to the Law and Justice Affairs Standing Committee of FDRE House of Peoples’ Representatives on 20th February 2024.
